A good car for under $45,000 CAD ($41250 USD)

Pretend your a 30 year old with a 3 year old daughter and a wife. Pretend, in 2008, you bought a Corolla S for your first car because Toyota was giving the best deal for a compact and you liked it the most at the time. Now you decide you need something better with money you saved, you plan to buy a new car in the next couple of years. Pretend your dream car is a Chevrolet Corvette.

I am none of these things but I do know someone who is. They are currently looking for a new car, and they have their eyes set on a brand new, or year old Hyundai Genesis (the Turboless V6 one). They don't like used cars, and probably will never buy one, they also don't like American cars and probably have a very low chance of buying one. I've almost convinced them to look at a mustang. The two cars they are most likely to buy are a 2014 Mazda 6 or a Hyundai Genesis Coupe, I advised against the Mazda because he wants a car that everyone will think is cool and whatever, and honestly, in about 10-15 years, the current Mazda 6 will be remembered as nothing but a Camry and Accord competitor. So are there any other cars for $45,000 CAD? Any recommendations?

Kinja'd!!!

A likely contender for his next purchase.

Note: he is weird and doesn't like wagons or hatches. Next car will be preferred to come in manual.

The G37 (now the Q60 coupe) starts at just over $40k USD. It's also the biggest competitor to the Gene Coupe. Decent competitor, and it sounds like sex.

I suggested this to him earlier, and hes looking. But hes super picky when it comes to used, he follows the whole "Another persons problem" philosophy.

The STI is out of the price range, the WRX isn't. I keep trying to convince him to get the WRX, especially since he wont ever go to a track. But he feels like he doesn't get the full effect. I really want him to get one because I've never been in a Subaru and the WRX STI is in my top 3 Favorite cars. I have 4 posters of current and last gen ones!

It's just at the upper bounds of the price limit. But if he's willing to spend the cheddar, it might very well be a better option. They both perform similarly. It's basically Class VS Brash at that point.

The new 4-door GTI when it comes out could be had for 10k less. But then there's the "never buy a redesigned car in its first model year" thing. The GTI should still be what it always was, a practical 4-door hatch that thinks its a sports car. Or he could get the current gen Golf R.

My other recommendation in this price range is always either a Golf R or an ATS 2.0T. Both would be quality autos but represent very different sections of the market.

this logic is beyond me too. He doesn't like the Camaro. He finds it to be much too common (I don't disagree, its everywhere) and that kinda makes it seem less impressive to him overall.

Yup, makes no sense to me either. I think the love for the Corvette comes from seeing one at an autoshow with his Dad, it's a nostalgic thing. But the reason he doesn't like American is because of the bad experience in the family. The only american car they had that didn't go to complete crap was my moms (his sisters) 2003 Malibu. Before that they only bought American, after that they never bought American.

If he wants a car that everybody thinks is cool, why is he considering a Genesis Coupe, which nobody thinks is cool? Just look at the overwrought styling.

Either way, most new cars are too nice to be cool. Being cool requires a certain amount of conviction. To me, a 4C owner is cool because the owner has chosen the difficult path instead of the easy way. Same goes for any Lotus, or anything completely impractical on the streets, but you just know that the owner is having a blast at the right road on the right time and that's the only reason he has it. A Genesis Coupe does not speak of conviction. Now a Volvo S60 does sort of. It's a tiny statement that says that you would indeed like a phone with better battery life even if it meant a smaller screen. And that your bike has fenders and brakes. It also is not the mundane choice.

So, Volvo S60, starting at 41k can$ it seems. Also, looks good, and I thought Volvo had quite good resale which is quite important if you're going to sell it. The Hyundai will have absolutely horrendous resale methinks. Korean boy racer car.

Assuming the Jetta GLI is made in Germany instead of Mexico (not sure about that) a fully loaded 6MT GLI can be had for 40 and change. A bit more mature looking, and very much the sleeper.

Same price - what a coincidence - as a loaded Audi A4 Quattro 6MT.

As for the Genesis, Ugh.

I'd buy something cheaper and just save my money to buy the 'vette for fair weather and non-toddler duty (haha, duty).

WRX isn't too expensive these days, but I'd almost just go for a focus ST. But he doesn't like american. So he just needs to not be so picky.

I'm half and half with you. I think the Volvo S60 and most of the cars you mentioned are cool, but I don't think the Genesis is not cool. I still go to highschool, and most people want to hear what the cool kids think is cool or whatever. Everyone finds the Genesis cool, over here brand preference is a thing of the past, since Hyundai is litereally topping everything in Canada currently. I don't know about the US but Hyundai has the most awards of any Car company, so it really helps when it comes to depreciation and all that, and the Genesis actually doesn't depreciate that fast surprisingly. We looked at used ones. Also RWD Coupe won't ever be uncool in my opinion, if it's made by toyota, hyundai or suzuki. It is just something that is so perfect, I give the Genesis props for not being some FWD crap box, like the Tiburon was. I've never really seen anyone insult a Hyundai for being Hyundai here since the new ones are overwhelmingly popular. Also if it's cool in his head, that should also count.

actually the 2015 STI starts at 38K in Canada and it has some pretty AMAZEBALLS lease deals(about $100-120/mth less that equivalent $38000 car with 0 down). That would be a better buy than the Genesis that's for damn sure and remember 4dr>2dr.

I know right!? My Grandpa had a Buick Skylark, Pontiac Bonneville, Pontiac Gran Prix in the past (and a firebird that someone crashed into while parked). My Grandmother has had a Chrysler LeBaron, Pontiac Sunbird, a 1999 Malibu. My mother has had a Cavalier (which she despised) and the '03 Malibu. Mostly GM cars, mainly because one of the Aunts in my family owned a Dodge Shadow, Dodge Stealth and then Dodge Intrepid, which all got tons of engine and transmission problems. Nobody in my family has owned a ford, and I to this day don't know why.

I don't say the car is uncool because it is a Hyundai. I'm saying it likely depreciates fast because it's a Hyundai. At least in the netherlands that seems to be the case. (I'm dutch)

Also, I don't think most two door coupe's are cool. I'd even say that most two door coupes are not cool at all. Too many boy racers wrapping them around poles. Driven wheels do not matter on coolness. I do applaud mfg's for still making them and I definitely want one, but I'm painfully aware of the non-coolness of something like a GT86. I'm also saying the Genesis is especially uncool because of the overwrought styling.

Also, I'm loathe to talk down to you based on age, but wouldn't you agree with me that most stuff that is cool in high school isn't cool later on in life? In any case, if you think something is cool, don't let anything some guy on the internet says about it get in your way.

Did last winter increase their appetite for an AWD car? It sure did mine. Spend more at the pumps but in that critical moment, a good AWD system can save the situation.

Maybe they should consider the Big Three, each of which has available AWD: the 3-Series, the C300 and the Quattro. Pricey, but each are either inside this range or just outside it. The A4, btw, has long had a reputation of being a very safe small car.

It actually decreased their appetite for a RWD car. Their corolla handeled the snow fine, but AWD would have helped. The Germans seem like a great idea, espeically BMW and Audi. My Grandpa's experience with Mercedes 'wonderful' customer support totally turns my uncle off from buying a merc.

VW's are a little overpriced in Canada. Although, the new GTI dropped in price by $1300 this year (to $27,995) which helps. In fact, you can get the sport package for just under $30k (before taxes, freight etc.), which adds the always awesome looking 18" rims and a sunroof (basically how I'd equip it). I've always felt that the GTI was pushing the limits of what I'd be willing to pay for a hot hatch in Canada, but between the really good quality interior and the conservative styling that ages well (I still think the Mk V looks good), it's a big win in my book (and now it's finally a bit cheaper in Canada, bigger win).

Can't really fault him for wanting the Genesis Coupe 3.8, the interior is fabulous (I've sat in several at past auto shows) and if I were buying it, I'd go for the V6 too (the 2.0T doesn't sound good enough). It'd make for an excellent GT car, a good everyday cruiser IMHO. If he were looking to hold on to it for 10-15 years, it's a pretty solid choice (if he were only keeping it for a few years, depreciation might be a concern).

Otherwise, I know he isn't the biggest hatch fan, but a new Mini Cooper S would be a decent choice, the price was reduced this year to $25490 (~$2500 cheaper). In person, the car is actually quite striking and the interior is quite nice (I liked the placement of the gear shifter, your hand falls right onto it from the steering wheel). With his budget, he could easily spec it just the way he likes it.

Also, dat v6:
